Beware !! Your picture could be stolen here !!

These sites :

http://pixdaus.com
http://allday.ru
http://www.cwer.ru
http://2photo.ru
http://vi.sualize.us

are massively stealing photography and most do not put any credit to the author or the website it was taken from.

Thanks for advising... something that has been happening for a long time now.. I believe the files we post are not large enough for the "thieves" to do much with... or am I misinformed...?

The only way not to get your pictures stolen is not to post honestly... That is part of the game. Whatever size you choose, anybody can take it and post it on their website.

(Sorry Bob Melnyk, I stole your picture for the example)
The only thing you can control is the quality of the image if thieves want to print. Personally I use "Change image size", make it 72 dpi and use 900 pxl wide max for landscape format or 700 pxl high for portrait. That is more than enough to see the details. If it's only for a profile pic or is not meant to be seen for artistic purpose (like snapshots for friends) It is not necessary to make it that big, so I use like about 500 pixels on the longest end.

When you make it WAY big, it's useless anyway since I have to scroll down my screen to see parts that are not shown. So I can never see it as a whole. My screen is not big enough !

I also include copyright info in the exif data and put my logo. There's a reason other that just playfulness why I never put my logo at the same place and well hidden : If the thief can see it right away, he can't clone it off.

I am not a good candidate for now but I want to take the habit for the day I will be. It is very hard to know if you have been a prey. Use Google Advance search. If you find some of yours, the only thing to do is demand your picture to be removed and inform that they must ask before taking somebody else's picture. I have educated my friends on the subject as non-photographer do not know it's a bad thing to do. When they don't credit the photographer, I always ask as a commentary so that indirectly I make people think of the Artist. Now, they are beginning to credit their images by their own.

we use Digimarc, it allows us to track all images and where they are being used, it is also very hard to remove, its not foolproof (someone can take a screenshot of the image, then open it in paint and re save it, but thats a lot of trouble) if a image goes to a site we will know.

But yes its true the foolproof way is to never share your images, it is sad but true, then again unless you are making REAL CASH with your images, the worry is nill, and hosting providers HATE when you tell them something of yours is on a hosted site illegally, they usually jump on it quite fast

hope this helps
