ok. I have asked a lot of you dear friends about my purchase I was going to do first thing tomorrow. But I did hassle other photographers I know and one asked me : Why do you choose Nikon ? I could not answer... Asking too many people is not necessarily helpful ! lol ! Now I don't want to trigger another friendly war that some of you enjoy doing. I personally do not think a brand is better than another but a particular camera or lens against it's rival, I suspect there's surely a winner.
One thing that is for sure, I swear, is that I will buy the Tamron 17-50mm f/1.8 and that is final.
My Nikonian choice is : the D300 and the prime 85mm f/1.8.
My Canoner choice is : the EOS 7D and the prime 85 mm f/1.8.
What is getting clearer in my head is that I want one prime and one zoom lens as a starter kit. The wider, telephoto, macro will be for later on. What I need for now, since I will be getting back to zero, is just normal zoom and that 85 mm that produces the beautiful shallow Dof that I'm impatient to produce. Why a prime and a zoom ? because I want to do some tests and fully understand the difference of how I will be working with each.
Note that I only started my canon research this evening and for the nikon, I started slowly, here and there, not full time, 4 months ago... The first difference I found is that the Canon kit is more expensive : 320$ more.
When somebody asks me a smart question that I cannot answer, it pushes me to investigate. I thank you very much for those who had the time to answer my request.
Les- I found out why overlapping could be useful : sometimes when you want a slightly wider or shallower, you don't have to change lenses when it's overlapping a bit. It's specially useful when you're in a situation where you have to be quick to not miss the moment.
Michael- Ah yes ? prime are sharper, cool to know. Of course, I read about the lenses weaknesses at their extremes but did not fully register the info. Thx for that ! and yes, I understand about wanting more lenses, I already have a wishlist on my next ones... ;]
Mark- well, I asked you because you have the D300... oh that makes me think Matt has one too, I forgot to ask him... If you are searching for a prime of about 24 or 35 mm. I was tempted by the Nikkor 35mm because it is so inexpensive and for it's price has good quality. For portraiture, your subject might appear to have bigger noses... maybe the Nikkor 85mm would be something to consider. Some say it's gives great portrait. I just chose it because I love the shallow Dof of the sampled images I saw compared to the 35mm. It also has a better review and is more expensive...
Geno-I adore close ups and macro, so when I will buy one, it will be a really amazing one, a specialized one that will be too expensive to buy with the DSLR and another lens. I'm reserving that purchase for when I get a hang on how the cam works.
I guess bottom line there's no bad choice, just bad manipulation afterwards, lol ! It's just that since it's my first DSLR, it will determine witch brand I will be stuck with for the rest of my life... So if you have any more thoughts that could help me finally decide, I would greatly appreciate it ! Sorry for the bother...
