It also depends on what you want for dof and what FL lens you are using.

i heard once that it is better to get close and focus...rather than zoom. is there truth in this?

NO you should not have to. And it is best to focus zoomed in as far as you can because you actually see more details to focus on.

Been trying the manual focus on my canon G10 and was wondering : If I zoom in and adjust the focus then, decide to zoom back without changing my position, do I have to re-adjust the focus ?

Suddenly CS4 won't do HDR on my new captures anymore. My camera setting are the same as before and I've re-loaded CS4 four different times and re-installed it four times, too. Lightroom works just fine. Any ideas?

I just say Mao to use fixed focal length lens like 50mm (prime lens) for practice. If she use zoom lens than will be confused with value of DOF.If you look my last photos with 600mm I get tiny DOF only few mm.Wide angle lens have bigger DOF.One more thing if we use 85 mm for portraiture is also have influence on DOF if we stay close or more far away from person. This also change shape of face.
About hand held Les have right but also depends on your hand ,my photos with 600 mm lens are taken hand held with 1/60 sec.Just lucky me.
Portraiture photography is very big term.It depends where are taken and which light is used. Are we like person with background or not and are we take all body or only head.It is for fashion or for art purpose.
Mao set on lens 50 mm AV than set on sweet spot of your lens.Take distance from person and try to take photos with changing aperture than go far away from subject and make all process again.Load photos on PC and take a look where is the best DOF for you.Latter experimenting with ISO.Take time and go step by step.
