Wow! The clarity and detail in this is stunning. And the way the eye colour matches the green background is a lovely touch too. What a great portrait.

Your Filbert Tree is infested by fungus, a bracket fungus... not sure of its name as I can't see all of the details needed for identification. Les has made some good comments. One way of improving the light below is to use a foil reflector to throw…

Looking at the focal lengths you posted in the EXIF , I think some of the challenges you are having is lens related. The kit lens with the 300D, like other Rebel lenses, are not great and even worse at close-ups. For these tight shots you really need a macro. The leaf images I shot recently and posted in my gallery, are all shot with a Sigma 105mm macro. I read you are looking at a macro lens. You might give this one some serious thought. A post to the discussion forum will get you lots of responses on lenses. I went with the Sigma 105 because it was cheaper then the Canon 100mm macro, just as good in quality and build and is an EF lens so it will work with a full frame camera down the road. I went with the 105mm because you can get great macro shots without having to get extremely close to the subject.

Hi Carol.... I have shots like your last four on my computer. My experience has been that the natural looks much better than what I have been able to capture. I recently discovered why... or at least what I think is why. In my series of dead leaf images, I switched my shooting away from flash photograph to the use of natural light and exposure compensation. What I have as photos are not a capture of what is actually there- a documentary photo- but an impression of what is there. I have light and focus falling off as I move from what my camera was centered on. I used partial metering and lowered the aperture from 1/3 to 2 full stops... often by shooting five or six shots of each subject, varying only on thing at a time. I am trying to read the light, to make a decision within 1-3 shots as to what is the best capture. I found a spot to focus on that captures most of what the scene is showing and concentrate on making that focused and in best lighting. I looked for the right f-stop for the best bokeh... it doesn't have to be a wide open lens (f/2 for example) nor does it have to be stopped down to f/22... it seems f/5.6 and lower are best, but of course that depends on how close the background is to the subject... shallow depth or great depth. Sorry... I seem to be rambling a bit.. but, like you, I am experimenting, trying to find how to capture camera how the subject makes me feel. I comment on each one. Keep in mind these are only my opinions.

Thank you Carol for commenting on my image 33 1/3. I also had a very large collection of LP's - sold or gave most of them away several years ago but kept about 30 favorites. Seldom play them but the LP's and player are in excellent condition when I get in the mood. Bob
